Bernaqua is the most popular swimming pool in Bern and the surrounding area. It boasts three areas where you can relax and have fun: a huge leisure pool, an extensive spa area and a fitness and sports park.
In the leisure pool, children can zoom down the famous Bernaqua slides on inflatable tyres or wear themselves out with water fights on the pirate ship. The spacious area for younger children boasts various slides and places to splash around in. Older swimmers can plunge into the icy cold-water pool or float along in the river pool.
Bernaqua also features one of the region's top sauna complexes as well as an Asian-style spa with soothing treatments including exfoliation, Thai massage and a detox programme. Pamper yourself at the Roman-Irish bath with a two-hour bathing ritual combining an ancient-style steam bath with an Irish hot dry air bath and gentle brush massage.
If you're looking for more action, you'll also find what you're looking for at Bernaqua. Join one of more than 70 group and fitness classes or work on your strength and stamina in the modern fitness park.
Solbad Schönbühl is home to Switzerland's largest natural salt-water pool. The wonderfully warm salt water, bubble beds, massage jets and underwater music all have a positive effect on the body, chasing away day-to-day stress completely.
The sauna complex at the popular thermal bath in Schönbühl also offers everything a sauna fan could wish for – from a Finnish sauna to a herbal steam bath and an earth-and-fire sauna heated by an open fire. Visit the spa area and indulge in a lengthy steam bath to cleanse your body before booking an additional massage or exfoliating scrub if you wish.
If you feel like a swim in Bern, you can't miss the Marzili: The famous open-air pool is just as much a part of Bern as the BearPark and the Zytglogge clock tower. The complex is situated below the Bundeshaus (Federal Palace) and attracts thousands of swimmers to the Aare every year with its pools, sunbathing lawns and direct access to the river. There's something for everyone, from a children's pool and diving pool to a river pool with life guards and a 50-metre pool. Good swimmers can treat themselves and cool off in the unsupervised Aare river pool. Entry to the Marzili is free of charge.
If you're looking for more of a classic swimming experience, head to Bern's Hirschengraben indoor pool. You'll find it just a few minutes' walk from the main railway station and the Hotel Savoy. Clock up some leisurely lengths in the well-maintained pools or work up a sweat in the sauna and steam bath.
Please note: On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 2 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. three lanes and the teaching pool at the Hirschengraben indoor pool are reserved for school swimming lessons. This applies the whole year round except during the city's school holidays.
